  21. I suggest you read the GUS FAQ and you'll probably conclude that you have
  22. the famous NMI problem. In fact I have the same problem too but I hope it
  23. will be solved by replacing my DRAM SIMMs.
  24.  
  25. What's in fact the problem ?
  26. The SIMMs they sell nowadays are often without a parity RAM (cheaper!).
  27. As a consequence, I can't enable the parity RAM check mechanism in the BIOS
  28. setup and hence, the NMI mechanism is disabled. However, the NMI must be
  29. enabled in order to use the GUS MIDI in and the SBOS emulation...
  30.  
  31. I hope I can solve the problem by using SIMMs which still have an extra 
  32. parity RAM on it.
  33. I bought a new computer at 'Vobis' a few weeks ago (486DX266) and I suppose
  34. ALL there new computers have the NMI problem and therefor none of them
  35. will work properly with the GUS.
  36. However, I'd like too to have some response from other people too who were
  37. confronted with the same problem (and maybe solved the problem in another way ?)

  50. About the last discussion about CDROM audio. 
  51. I have made a program which reads CDROM audio data through the MSCDEX interface.
  52. (CDINFO)
  53. For some time I am working at a program which reads (in real time) CD audio 
  54. into memory & plays it on the GUS.
  55. Just as Klaas Hemstra mentioned you can be able to do nice tricks:
  56. * SCRATCH with your CDROM (working on it)
  57. * Play BACKWARDS!!  
  58. * Play as slow/quick as the device can handle.
  59.  
  60. The program is in VERY-alpha-state.. so I do not know if I get all of these 
  61. tricks done.

  105. Here's some extra info about CDINFO.. :)
  106.  
  107. CDINFO can read some drives which are hooked up using SCSI (hardware) and have 
  108. an interface with DOS through MSCDEX (software). But the program was made for 
  109. drives which have only the MSCDEX interface. (Non-SCSI)
  110. Beware of some facts:
  111. * Some CDROMs do not have the capability to READ RAW AUDIO!! (Due to copyright
  112.   issues)
  113. * Many CD AUDIO GRABBERS DO NOT SYNCHRONIZE THE SOUND DATA. Resulting in skips
  114.   & pops during play. Also the frequency is not quite right!
  115.   - CDINFO has a synchronize-scheme allowing you to read the sound
  116.   data in superior quality.
  117.   - Also KLAAS HEMSTRA has made source code available for synchronizing the 
  118.   audio-stream, but his scheme works different.

  124. cdrom to your harddisk. Without any sampling errors/hiss/destortion.
  125. In full 16bit, 44100 hz stereo sound. no need for a soundcard!!

  128. Reads raw audio data through mscdex interface (no scsi needed)
  129. Up to zillion tracks.. handy for sampler disks

  132. Gives info about your cd.. see if your data CDROM has an audio track
  133. Plays cd audio on background...also in DOS/WINDOWS
  134. Nice graphic drawing.. ahem
  135. Graphic and text interface.. for old monitors
  136. Synchronized read of CD audio data... error free
